Reference: Mery- Les Sabres-Baionnettes Chassepot Et Remington pg 21
In the 1860s France began trials to select a new infantry weapon. These trials led to the development of the Chassepot rifle. By 1866 the competition was down to two main contenders. The Camp de Chalons- an early bolt action and the 1865 Vincennes Carbine- a percussion muzzle loader. 100 Vincennes carbines and bayonets were ordered in 1866 and this is one of those. Numbered 58 in the clot. It has an internal spring latching system. Dated 1866 on the back of the blade. The bayonet is in excellent condition. The muzzle ring has been opened up to 20.9 mm to fit another rifle. A very interesting bayonet with the correct scabbard.
